Self-hosting was merely a channel for customer acquisition, not a commitment to customer sovereignty.

Alternative Equilibria

The Reddit thread’s comments reveal a community learning this lesson in real time. Recommendations for alternatives dominate the discussion: ToolJet (Apache 2.0), Budibase (GPL v3), NocoDB (AGPL, recently relicensed from Apache). Each comes with actual source code. Each offers a different equilibrium point in the trade-off between convenience and control.

These alternatives are not perfect substitutes. The visual builder may be less polished. The ecosystem of integrations smaller. The time-to-value longer. But the loss function is different — bounded rather than potentially unbounded. The worst-case scenario is migration, not extinction.

Toward a Better Valuation Model
